St Stephen's Episcopal Church is happy to announce the appointment of Jim Day as Artist in Residence.

Jim comes to us from Maine, where he studied theater and art at the University of Maine. Upon graduation he ran away with the internationally famous Big Apple Circus, and can boast that for a year he could call his roommate a clown without offense. He also has a history of service in the sacred arts at his former parish in Maine and here at St. Stephen's (creating icons, banners, quilts, singing in our choir and writing & directing children's performances).

Jim is working on his fourth summer in the costume shop at Shakespeare & Company, and looks forward to designing his fifth fall festival in September. He has already enriched the parish with banners, icons, and most recently, a hand-drawn labyrinth that for one Sunday graced the front walkway to the church.

Some of the activities/projects that
the Artist in Residence program may include are:

  • Wednesday evening improvisation and performance time with children;
  • creating art work and art space for our parish;
  • connecting with other artists and art development efforts in the city
    and county on behalf of the parish;
  • periodic intergenerational events;
  • special celebrations and workshops & seminars for adults.

In addition, there is the possibility of an after-school arts and academic enrichment program for middle school students. This dovetails with our desire to more fully serve children and youth in Pittsfield and at St. Stephen's. Jim brings a diverse and creative blend of talents and vision to St. Stephen's, as well as one of the few orange cars in the Berkshires.
